Caring For People With Learning Disabilities At Christmas

Christmas is a magical, happy and exciting time for most families, full of laughter and festive fun, but for families whose loved ones have a learning disability, this can be far from the most wonderful time of the year. The flashing lights, crowds of people, unexpected guests, loud music and even family gatherings can cause severe anxiety and distress to those suffering from a learning disability, particularly those with Autism. The National Autistic Society produced a video to try and give some insight into what it's like for people with autism, take a look at the video, then try to imagine the same scenario at Christmas with all the music and lights. Far from the special time that most people experience, Christmas for those with learning disabilities, sometimes, has to be more like a 'normal' day. As if Christmas isn't stressful enough for most parents, it is especially stressful for those whose children suffer from learning disabilities, where they need to make sure their child sticks to as near to the usual routine as possible whilst ensuring other siblings [...]

Getting ready for Art Therapy!

Art Therapy @ Cura-Care The Cura-Care team are so excited to introduce Nickie J as your trainee Art Therapist! Nickie now has open spaces in her diary to provide Art Therapy services for children and adults. Nickie sums up what Art Therapy is: ”Art Therapy is a type of talking therapy that uses art materials as it’s primary form of expression and communication'' ''It is not a diagnostic tool but can help people to address and work through some emotional issues and distressing and confusing times in their lives” So armed with Play Doh, Paints and Pom-poms, Nickie aims to support people to manage their emotional wellbeing in addition to our other mental health services. Dementia What is Dementia?  “Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. There are different causes of dementia and many different types”.  Symptoms may include: Thinking speed Memory Loss Mental Sharpness and quickness Language - struggling to use words Understanding Judgement Mood Movement Difficulties doing daily activities How does Cura-Care support someone with Dementia? Depending on the level and form of dementia, we would support the individual to stay within their home.
